There are several websites that offer home evaluations over the net or even over the phone. There are even websites that show a map of house prices.

I do not consider this a professional service at all and those methods will give you incorrect or at least incomplete information most of the time. Here are a couple of reasons why these automated tools do not work :

1. They only compare recently sold prices of property in your area of interest, which is incomplete information, as many of houses in the neighborhood may not have sold recently.

2. They do not take property conditions into account, like type of finishes, lot size, roof conditions etc.

3. They do not take location issues into account, like a laundry business next door, or a corner lot, etc

4. They do not take pest report and repairs into account.

5. They do not take credits into account, given at close of escrow to buyer or seller.
